
Are you a high school student in Assembly District 24 who is interested in learning more about the State Government
Assemblymember Alex Lee invites you to apply to the Young Legislators Program in Assembly District 24. This free, up to 8-week program will offer participants the opportunity to learn about the state legislative process and advance their advocacy skills in order to cultivate the next generation of civic leaders.
The Assembly is the lower branch of the California State Legislature, which is the legislative branch within the California State government.
The 24th Assembly District includes the cities of Fremont, Newark, Milpitas, North San Jose, and Sunol. Assemblymember Alex Lee has represented this district since December 2020.
Assemblymember Alex Lee is the youngest Asian American legislator ever elected and the first openly bisexual state legislator in California history. He currently serves as Chair of the Committee on Human Services and the Legislative Progressive Caucus.
Program Details
- Students must apply to this competitive program; 10 students will be selected
- The program will run during the fall and spring academic semesters
- Participants will be required to meet once a week for up to eight weeks for 2-3 hour educational sessions
- Participants will be required to volunteer at a minimum of one community meeting/event hosted by or with Assemblymember Alex Lee
- Participants will learn about the state government, legislative process, and the issues affecting the 24th Assembly District
- Upon completing the program, participants will travel to Sacramento to visit the State Capitol.
- Participants will conduct their research and work on their project throughout the program and will be required to submit and present their bill ideas at the program's conclusion.
Requirements:
- Must be a high school student
- Must live or attend high school in the 24th Assembly District
- Commit to 8 weeks, 2-3 hours meetings (program is free of cost)
- Commit to attending the Sacramento field trip, visiting the State Capitol
**Attendance is required for all sessions; if you are absent for more than one session, you will be removed from the program
