Today, Assemblymember Alex Lee (D-San José) was appointed Chair of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials (ESTM) Committee by Speaker Anthony Rendon.
The Committee oversees bills related to toxic substances and hazardous materials, hazardous waste regulation, drinking water regulation, and pesticides.
“It’s an honor to be named Chair of the Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee — a vital committee that works to protect our health and our environment,” said Assemblymember Alex Lee. “I’m grateful to be entrusted with leading this committee, the first committee I presented at two years ago, and I’m looking forward to our work in the new session!”
When students at a school in his district were potentially being exposed to hazardous materials because their school was built next to a concrete plant, Assemblymember Lee took action with one of his first bills, AB 762. Since then, he has repeated efforts to ensure students and teachers are equally protected from toxic sites.
“I will work diligently to protect our ecosystems, mitigate the all-too-common toxins that fill our streams and streets, and hold negligent polluters accountable,” he added.
He succeeds former Assemblymember Bill Quirk who chaired the ESTM committee from 2016-2022.
